WHAT A SLUT

The project What a Slut examines social condemnation, the reclaiming of derogatory language and the destructive power of the male gaze. Inspired by the artist's own experiences as a queer woman, the work addresses feminism, queerness and mental health.

The central element is a large, pink, fluffy fabric work with the lettering ‘SLUT’. The word is deliberately presented provocatively as a symbol of self-empowerment. Cut-outs in the fabric reveal parts of the artist's body, intertwining vulnerability and strength. The installation is accompanied by an A5 book documenting court cases in which victims of sexualised violence were accused or shamed. The book highlights the deeply rooted rape culture and internalised misogyny.

What a Slut reflects on the contradictory portrayal of female sexuality, which is demonised through slut-shaming on the one hand and hypersexualised on the other. The work invites us to question these contradictions and, through soft textures and handmade details, creates a safe space that combines tenderness and reflection.
